"GET IT TO SHOOP" as Harrisburg takes down Berks Catholic

One thing you can say about a Harrisburg Cougar boys basketball game is they might have the most unpredictable players around.....   just when you think you have them figured out, someone else spoils your entire game plan....    That's what seemed to happen Friday night as Harrisburg took on Berks Catholic....

Harrisburg gives CD East the business!!!!

All I can say is WOW!!!!!   This was a day every player and fan was looking forward to....  The Harrisburg Cougars vs the CD East Panthers has become a nice rivalry since 2008 - 2009 season when East had ex Cougars Jonathan Breeden and Terrence Kellum to go along with Demond Bates and Amani Glenn as they walked into Kimber Gymnasium and handed Harrisburg their first home lost in about 6 years....  Since then, it seems as if every East team approach to a game vs Harrisburg is a confident approach....   The PLAYERS seem to really believe they can win....   Today seemed no different as East kept this game close for 2 and a half quarters....    But then the Cougars AWOKE......

How to land a College Scholarship.....

These days it seems as though every parent and every player already think they have all the answers to be a College player or Pro player.....   I'm here to tell you that I don't know everything, but I do have a clue as to what it takes....

I speak with College coaches on a regular basis on all levels because I love to help kids get an opportunity to play at a higher level....  Only problem is most kids don't do their part...  It makes it very difficult to be a "recruitable" kid if you dont have all of your "stuff" together!!!

Here's a few things that can help a young player out in these tough times as a player.....

Harrisburg fights from down 18 to beat Lancater McCaskey

All I can say is "WOW".....  In the first game at Kimber Gymnasium, it's going to be hard to top that one....   Harrisburg coming in ranked #5 in the State vs Lancaster McCaskey ranked #6 in the State, this exceeded the expectations and then some.....

Now, just so everyone understands, I predicted that Harrisburg would win this game in overtime by 4 points...

Harrisburg ended up winning this game 99 - 94 in OVERTIME!!!!

Steelton starts off 0 - 2 as they fall to Berks Catholic...

When you look at this Steelton team on paper, all you can say is "WOW".....  They have tons of athleticism and talent plus there's some guys with a great deal of Varsity experience.....  So what's the problem?   I'm not 100% sure but I think I have an idea......

Indians over CD in the Hoffman Ford Finals...

The Susquehanna Indians are on a roll as they took down Steelton on day 1 and then Central Dauphin in the Finals of the Hoffman Ford HS Boys Basketball tournament 48 - 37....   This was a very low scoring game due to a combination of solid defense and sloppy ball play...

CD handles State Ranked Berks Catholic with deep threes...

This is a new year for the CD Rams....  No more Devin Thomas, No more Nick Seefelt....  so people may be asking "Who in the world does CD have this year?" .....   What they have is guys who were used to doing all the dirty work, now ready to lead these Rams to a successful season.....

The Indians hand Steelton 1st loss to kick the season off....

The highly anticipated game between two cross town rivals was in full effect Friday night....  All of the Alumni from both schools wore their colors proud as their respected teams took the floor for what was expected to be a battle to the end....   Susquehanna had their cheering section, louder than ever as Steelton had Roller legend Eddie Albert leading the way cheering for his team......   Once the game began, all of the fans would not be disappointed.......

Why won't Mid Penn Teams seek Competition????

I often wonder to myself, why kids in the Harrisburg, PA area often get stuck playing lower level basketball after high school.....   Is it because they just aren't talented?   Or maybe it has something to do with location, kids would rather stay close to home.....    I'm really not sure, but whatever the reason may be, we have to figure out a solution fast.....

Can the average kid really be a professional athlete???

By: Coach Little

These days when we ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, we get answers like, " I wanna play in the NBA" or "I wanna play football"....  We as adults have always heard that the chances are slim so don't focus on sports too much....  My question is, should we really try to kill our children dreams by telling them their chances are slim in being a professional athlete?

AAU vs High School (What's the Real Deal?)

Every year, the debate rages between high school coaches and AAU coaches. The problem, of course, is that there is no such thing as The High School Coach or The AAU Coach. There is very little consistency between one high school coach and another, just as there is little consistency between one AAU coach and another. Coaches, by and large, are individuals. Some are good at what they do, and some are not....

How to improve perimeter play....

Perimeter players have to be the most versatile players on the court. They should have the ability to get to the basket and hit the open shot. They are secondary ball handlers and primary rebounders. They play outside, they play inside, and must have the ability to defense in both areas as well.....

Last week in April for Colleges to watch kids play...

AAU Basketball has grown so much throughout the years...   At one time, only "THE BEST" players made the team and they traveled around the States to compete at high levels vs other top players in other States...  Each State may have had 4 - 5 teams and they were all very good with "HIGH MAJOR" players...

The Queens, NY based I.S. 8 Spring league is starting up.....

To the unaccustomed player, the biannual basketball tournament held at Richard Grossley Junior High School—better known as IS-8 (as in Intermediate School 8)—can be intimidating. For starters, it's a taxing trip to the Jamaica, Queens-located school; without the aid of a car, the journey from the nearest NYC borough can take over an hour..........

With the State playoffs coming and the regular season being done with, here's a look at the Super 17 players in the Harrisburg area for their performance this season.....

Coach Archer takes Pine Grove to the Championships....

Notre Dame High School faced Pine Grove in the District 11 Class AA boys basketball semifinals with both teams staring at a district championship berth, a spot in the PIAA tournament -- or an unceremonious end to their season.
And for the second straight year, it was Pine Grove that will be moving on while Notre Dame was left with the prospect of packing up the basketballs and wondering what if.

Harrisburg and Chambersburg meet in the Finals...

OK, let's be honest, who would have predicted this match up?  In the beginning of the season most people said "this Harrisburg team is OK, but District finals?  Nah!" and the after Skyler Roman went down with a knee injury, most people had Chambersburg not even making the playoffs......    Hats off to both programs for sticking to their script and handling their business....

Harrisburg vs York and CD East vs Chambersburg.... Who wants it more????

Man, I tell ya, it almost doesn't get any better than this.....  You have a classic battle between Harrisburg and York on one side of the brackets and then you have a Commonwealth 3rd round brawl between East and Chambersburg on the other side....   Not one person can sit here and say they know who's winning these games for sure....

Mid Penn looking good in AAAA Districts as Harrisburg, CD East and Chambersburg advance...

THIS IS WHY WE PLAY THE GAME......   You hear that statement time and time again but this year we see it really means something....

Bud Mack goes crazy and SCORES SCHOOL RECORD 54 points......

With all the District 3 playoff basketball going on, there's a little school in Mechanicsburg that has their own thing going on.....   After losing to Demacus by 15 pts yesterday, Emmanuel Baptist had to play in the 3rd place game vs Huntingdon Academy.....   EBCA would not be denied today winning 88 - 66....

McD comes up short as Lampeter-Straburg takes them down...

When this game first began, I thought these two teams were rivals or something.....  The intensity level was at a high, guys were diving, pumping their fist, AND THE GAME JUST BEGAN.......   I knew I was in for a treat tonight....

Friday, February 24, 2012

Harrisburg and CD wins.... Hershey goes down....

Looks like the Commonwealth Division has taken over as the top division this year afterall....   Lots of talk about Hershey and Cedar Cliff this year, and they deserved it, they just couldn't get the wins when it really counted....

"Always Steady" leads East in an upset over Cedar Cliff....

It doesn't get any better than this if you're a CD East fan....  Excited about getting back to the playoffs since winning the gold in 2009, CD East fans have something else to cheer about....  They have a great chance to go to States as well because they took down one of the District 3 favorites Cedar Cliff.....

Emmanuel Baptist advances to the Semi Finals behind Mack's big performance....

While all the other local schools are involved in District playoffs, EBCA has their own thing going on....  They compete in the KCEA tournament for a chance to get their 3rd straight KCEA AA Pennsylvania State Championship....

So long to Hanna

Like Boyz 2 Men said, "It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday"....  This is how a few local teams felt after going down in the 2nd round games for AAA Districts.....  Just like that, season over!!!

Can McDevitt or Susquehanna make a run in Districts????

When you look at the brackets for AAA, I help help but to keep saying to myself, "It's anybody's game"...  I don't really see a clear cut dominant team on the AAA level.....

Districts is here folks....

Finally, Playoffs are here....  This is what we all have been waiting for....   Let's take a look at what the possible outcomes may be for AAAA....

When a college team loses its starting point guard of three or four years, the transition to the new guy often isn't smooth. Two or three candidates, all with different attributes, liabilities and experience levels, may be involved. It can be a crap shoot for the coach to decide upon one and the verdict moment can bleed well into the season........

Steelton Pony league game of the week...

The Harrisburg area has some great basketball going on these days....  You can go uptown Harrisburg and get some good run at the YMCA, you can go to Susquehanna and play at Thomas Holtzman in their junior league (5th grade and under) or Steelton Elementary in the Albert's Pony league on the weekends....

Today's featured game happens to be in Steelton where two undefeated teams went at it hard.....  All I can say is "WHAT A GAME"......

Friday, January 6, 2012

New Hope Middle school gets huge win over Lancaster Wheatland.....

All week Coach Chris Scott had been hearing about how good Wheatland was and how they're the best middle school team in Lancaster....  Instead of fearing them, he used it as motivation to get his team fired up....  I guess it worked as the came out with the road victory of 59 - 37.....

McDevitt Squeeze out another victory...

In this Mid Penn conference, you better not take a night off....  With a bunch of teams in the middle of the pack trying to protect their home court at least, McDevitt did just that in a 49 - 41 victory over Carlisle....

Predictions on todays games 1/6/12....

PSU - Harrisburg is on a roll right now and seems to be growing as a program rapidly...    With PSU-HBG picking up local guys and a few outsiders, they are well on their way to becoming one of the top Division 3 programs in the country within the next few years.....

Monday, January 2, 2012

This weeks predictions 1/2 - 1/6....

Here's a look at this weeks games......

McDevitt vs Cumberland Valley - For some reason CV hasn't been able to get it together over the years....  They have a lot of talent but it's not producing wins.....  McDevitt is coming off of a two game winning streak and need this win in a big way...  Expect the role players (Jordan Brooks, Milik Gantz, Jaquan Johnson, and Donte Vaughn) to really have impacts on this game as CV will focus on stopping 1000 point scorer Aaron Devan (23 ppg) .  David Craig will be a load for MCD to handle inside but can the guards get him the ball where he needs it???   McDevitt by 5 in a tough one.....

Susquehanna vs Green Castle -  This is a game of who can win the coaching battle as Coach Martin will use his wheel offense to exploit his size advantage over Susquehanna....  Hanna will need a big game from Shoop Shepard on offense and defense if they want to have a chance to win but with pg Gabe Mack out, who can run the show for Hanna???  Too many question marks, Too much Coach Martin, Green Castle by 7 points....

CD East vs Cedar Cliff - This is a rough week for CD East as they play some of the areas top teams...  On paper, the match ups are in the favor of Cedar Cliff as they'll most likely use a solid 1-3-1 zone with Christo Majok up top to bother East with his length...  Cedar Cliff's Logan Stumpf (Gardner Webb signee) has been on fire lately and I expect him to keep it up in this fast paced game.  If CD East's pg Eddie Cowan can control the tempo of this game, East can have a chance...  If not, it could get ugly fast because CC has too many solid horses and are coached very well...    First 3 quarters will be close, 4th quarter, Cedar Cliff takes over and wins by 13 points....

CD East vs CD - This game will be jammed packed early as these two sister schools will do their tradition double header of girls play at 6pm and boys at 7:30pm....   CD will use a lot of strategy to get Devin Thomas into the game early and often....  East starts a very small team so expect CD to exploit the mis match inside until East can figure out a way to stop it....  CD East's Reggie Dudley (19ppg) will be a man on a mission but CD will be all over him so someone else will have to step up...  That someone will be Tony McCraw...  East thrives off of turn overs but veteran guard Nick Seefelt really takes good care of the basketball so it can be tough for East......   CD by 19 points as Thomas goes for 25 points and 15 rebs

Steelton vs Harrisburg - Too much MacIntyre as Harrisburg will pressure Steelton into turnover after turnover....  Steelton will play well in the first half but inexperience will set in after halftime and the Cougars will keep the lead going up and up...  Harrisburg ends up with a 23 point win as Harrisburg plays 12 guys all game...

Harrisburg vs CD - This is the game everyone is waiting for...  This game determines who's the top team in the area right now...  CD has been winning games but haven't played their best yet...  Harrisburg has been scoring lots of points but Haiisheen MacIntyre can't do it all by himself...  Steven Stoney and Jerel Patterson has to begin to be more consistent in order for Harrisburg to win...  Devin Thomas will be a difficult matchup and Ryan Beaver is a lights out shooter...  If Nick Seefelt can handle the pressure, CD can walk out with a nice win...   CD edges Harrisburg by 5 because of the referees in my opinion...  Refs won't let the players play as this will be a free throw shooting game all game...  Be ready to record your favorite shows after 9pm...

Emmanuel Baptist vs Red Lion Christian - EBCA had a really good week of work outs and should be ready for the game....  Red Lion always has a nice team and are full of juniors and seniors....  EBCA will need Nehemiah "Bud" Mack to have a huge game and also Tyrece Little has been playing well as of late coming off the bench....  If those two guys can combine for 40 or more points, expect EBCA to win by 10 points...

Swatara Middle vs Central Dauphin Middle split games...

On one of my few free days of the week, I had a chance to check out some of the local talent in the middle school area here in Harrisburg....   The future is looking bright....
