"GET IT TO SHOOP" as Harrisburg takes down Berks Catholic

One thing you can say about a Harrisburg Cougar boys basketball game is they might have the most unpredictable players around.....   just when you think you have them figured out, someone else spoils your entire game plan....    That's what seemed to happen Friday night as Harrisburg took on Berks Catholic....
If Berks Catholic did their HW on Harrisburg, a couple of key elements to focus on was keep Jerel Patterson out of the paint and always know where Jahaad Proctor is on the court....   So while Berks worked hard on doing those two task, what they didn't prepare for was Steven "McNasty" Stoney driving baseline or Shaquon "Shoop" Sheppard post hard from block to block.....   That, along with some pesky defense, gave Harrisburg just the spurts they needed to pull out a 12 point victory winning 62 - 50....

Berks started the game off hitting shots as they took an early 6 - 4 lead....  within the first 5 minutes of the game, Harrisburg had a brand new 5 on the floor and this was a scary group....   They started the game with Patterson, Proctor, Don Rawls, Chris Britton and Kyle Cook....  not bad...   After 5 minutes they had Jamaal Carter, Ashton Cooksey-Easter, James Ezell, Stoney and Shoop.....   huh????    Somehow that doesn't seem fare....   That second group of guys could take on any first 5 in the Mid Penn and probably take on most first fives in the State of PA....  Well all they did was turn a 6 - 4 defecit into a 19 - 8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter and 23 - 8 after the first 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter....

It all happened so fast as Stoney was a man on a mission....   He finished the 1st quarter with 7pts, 3 assist and 3 steals as Kirk Smallwoods group played 11 guys (Dejour Williams being the 11th) that quarter....

Shoop had a task in front of him as Berks had a 6'10 sophomore Nana Foulland, who is very raw but has a huge upside...   If this kid can live in the weight room and develop just a few low post moves, he could end up being a High Major Prospect for Division 1....  Regardless of Nana's size, he had a hard time with Shoops 6'5  260lbs wide body...  Shoop was able to get position in the paint as Harrisburg worked on chopping up Berks Catholic's 2-3 zone....  They hit the high post to low post, went short corner, Patterson did a lot of penetrating a dishing as Shoop was a factor instantly scoring 6 points in his first 6 minutes of play.....

Berks played much better in the 2nd quarter and The Cougars made a ton of bad fouls which stopped their momentum....   Berks was at the free throw line shooting "1 and 1" for most of the 2nd quarter but they missed the front end of the "1 and 1" FIVE TIMES IN A ROW.....   and still went to the half trailing 25 - 21 behind the tough play of junior pg Chris Warren.....   This was my 3rd time watching him this season and this kid is tough as nails....   He had a lot of pressure on him, being the only ball handler, and he did very well....   Once he was able to get past the backcourt pressure, he usually made a positive play happen....

Once the 3rd quarter began, Harrisburg came out with Patterson, Cooksey-Easter, Stoney, Shoop and Rawls as they set it off with a 14 - 6 run to extend the lead to 12 points.....  Although Berks would compete hard, they wouldn't get any closer than 9 points as Mike Miller began to hit some outside shots for Berks and Conner Jack had a couple of nice finishes inside.....

If I would have told you that Harrisburg's starting backcourt would only score 4 points but they will still win by double digits, you might have laughed at me.....    Patterson didn't score many points but what he did was get a ton of  "Hockey Assist"....   He seemed to always make the pass that led to another person's assist....  Ball movement like that picked right through BC zone defense....   Although he had 5 assist of his own, making those extra passes was huge for the Cougars....  Proctor is a young guy who just has to stay ready, even if the shot is off....   Always be prepared to do other things on the floor to help your TEAM!!!   This is a long season and each and every player will have ups and downs...  It's how you bounce back from a down game that justifies you as a player.....

Stats for the game were as follows....  Shoop led the way with 17 points, Stoney had a nice all around game with 10 points, 7 assist, 7 rebs and 5 steals, Patterson had 2 points, 5 assist, and 4 steals, Cooksey-Easter had 6 points and 5 steals, Kyle Cook hand 6 pts and 6 rebs while Dom Lewis scored 6pts in limited time.... Berks Catholic was led by Mike Miller who hit a couple of late three pointers to get 13 points and Chris Warren scored a tough 11 points....  Sophomore Conner Jack chipped in 7 points and 7 rebs while Foulland finished with 8 points, 9 rebs and 4 blocks....

In Saturdays consolation game Berks will take on Freire Charter out of Philly as they lost at the buzzer to Church Farm School on a buzzer beater by 5'8 rock solid guard Arndota Anyam with 3 seconds left....   That game will be at 6pm followed by Harrisburg vs Church Farm School at 7:30pm.....

Cougars on three, 1...2....3...  COUGARS!!!
Church Farm School has a 7 footer named Larry Cernak plus a bunch of little fast guards....  This game will be a high scoring one, probably somewhere in the 80's or 90's .....    If you have any free time this evening, Kimber Gym is the place to be.....
