South Central Select - The "New Kids On The Block" are moving in the right Direction......

Every weekend it seems another team steps up to the plate and really begins to establish itself.  Being that the teams are comprised of kids from all over, it is always fun as a coach, parent, spectator, or player to witness the coming together of a team from beginning to end.  Well, we are about halfway or so through the season, and it's safe to say the 15U boys and 17U girls have arrived.  Read on to find out about this past weekend, where all of the boys' teams were playing at the York Ballers Classic (two championship game appearances) and three of the girls' teams were playing at the Pocono Mountain Classic......

Led by Coach Wayne Fletcher, the 15U boys may be one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the area.  Anchored with a high-pressure, full-court trapping defense and Coach Fletcher's demanding style of outworking other teams, the squad came together and flourished this weekend.  After collaring its first championship two weeks ago, the team started its weekend on the right note with a 45-33 win over Perry Hall.  Not losing a step, they soundly defeated Southern Berks 64-25 and clinched the #1 seed in its pool.  In the tournament semi-finals, the team faced off versus a very talented All Sports Rens club.  Though hotly contested, Coach Fletcher and the team played tough and pulled off the 52-43 victory.  In the tournament championship, the boys put on a show and flattened Wall 2 Wall, 70-43.  An excellent tournament title for the team.  You can find their championship picture below.  Congrats!!
The 16U boys began their weekend with a 50-43 win over King of Prussia Patriots.  Up 15 at halftime, the squad couldn't quite shake their "tale-of-two-halves" demeanor but still pulled out the win.  In its second game, the 16U boys put naysayers' thoughts to rest, played two complete halves of basketball, and pounded Lebanon Thunder, 68-38, and clinched the #1 seed out of their pool.  In Sunday's semi-final game versus a talented, sharpshooting CATS Team, the 16U SCS boys came out flat defensively and paid the price for a half.  Combo'd with 8 threes by the CATS, Coach Savercool and the team found itself down 13 at halftime.  The kids showed resilience and competed in the 2nd half, eliminating the lead and sending the game to overtime.  In OT, Manny Gonzalez (So., Central Dauphin) scored with 4 seconds left to cap off the come-from-behind win, 56-55.  In the championship versus a 'refreshed' YC Elite, the boys came out flat yet again and found themselves down 21 at halftime.  Sticking true to form, they clawed their way back into it in the 2nd half and made it a 2-point game but simply couldn't overcome the large hole they dug themselves into and ended up losing by 5.  Still, a great weekend for the squad.

Rounding out the other boys' teams, the 11U/12U boys, playing in the 12U division, Coach Bobby Thomas and his energetic crew fell in a tough one in their first game by 1.  In their 2nd game, the young'ns fell to the eventual-champion Wall 2 Wall.  The team completed its weekend on Sunday with another close loss, but still left the tournament with heads held high.  The 13U boys played their first game on Friday night and came out slow, falling to York Unity by 17.  In its Saturday game, the team couldn't quite close out the win and fell at the buzzer to Chillies by 1.  In another nailbiter, Coach Green and the team dropped its 3rd game in triple overtime to Advanced Hoops, 40-37.  Coach Torchia and the 14U boys may be the "Cardiac Kids" bunch of the entire organization.  Finding itself on the winning side and losing side of many close games, the team continued its ways this weekend.  After a flurry of calls and no-calls, the team dropped its first game to York Ballers, 45-42.  In its second game, the team dropped a 2nd heartbreaker, losing at the buzzer to CATS.  In their third game, the team rebounded versus IBA and dropped them by 33.

On the girls' side, the 17U team, led this weekend by Coach Stradley as Coach Hicks had other commitments, played to its potential and did a lot of damage at the Pocono Mountain Classic.  In its first game, they handled LV Blitz, 60-37.  They followed it up with a 61-46 victory over PA Renegades.  In its Sunday matinee, the team's winnings ways continued, where they controlled NJ Mavericks from start to finish, defeating them 62-22.  They won their final game on Sunday over Union County Cyclones, capping off a stellar 4-0 weekend for the 17U girls.

The 15U girls, also led this weekend by Coach Stradley, played up in the 16U division but showcased their skills admirably.  After going 0-2 on Saturday, with a 54-43 loss to PA Renegades and then a hardy loss to NJ Sting, the girls' came out on Sunday on a roll.  After pulling out a tremendous 38-36 win in overtime over NY Golden Eagles, Coach Stradley guided her team, playing shorthanded with only 5 girls, to a gutsy 42-36 win over PA Renegades.  A fantastic finish for the girls, getting to go home on a good note.

After being our headliner a few weeks ago, Coach Royer and the 13U girls also ventured up to the Pocono Mountain Classic for a taste of a D2/D3 exposure and continued their winning ways.  After smoking Northeast Spirit in its first game, 58-10, the team met much stiffer competition but still pulled out the win over the 14U Rock Solid, 48-47.  The girls split their Sunday games, albeit shorthanded, but left East Stroudsburg with a 3-1 record and a lot of memories.
