Harrisburg school district just might survive for Athletics....

Harrisburg School District students might not lose their athletic programs next school year despite the projected $7.7 million hole in the district’s preliminary 2012-13 budget. ......

The Harrisburg school board is seeking proposals to keep high school athletic programs despite the budget deficit.
Dwayne B. “Doc” Thomas, who heads the Harrisburg Sports and Arts Foundation, has proposed a way to keep sports without the district having to spend the nearly $400,000 it costs to maintain the programs.

Thomas contends the district could make enough money for athletics to pay for themselves by using its facilities and infrastructure.....

He told the school board Monday night that one foolproof way to boost revenue would be through sponsorships. The district could sell ad space in gymnasiums and in seasonal program guides.
Other suggestions included fundraisers, cook-offs and pay-to-play, as well as holding tournaments and camps that are open to children from across the midstate.
School board member Brendan Murray called the proposal “very promising.”
The board’s budget and finance committee will meet at 6:30 tonight to look for more ways to trim spending.
