When this game first began, I thought these two teams were rivals or something..... The intensity level was at a high, guys were diving, pumping their fist, AND THE GAME JUST BEGAN....... I knew I was in for a treat tonight....
McD came out in a man to man defense as the game plan looked like they were going to stay tight on a man to try and create turnovers for transition opportunities..... Nice game plan, but the recovery didn't move fast enough as Josh Miller from LS caught fire early hitting 2 threes helping LS take a 7 - 2 lead in the first 4 minutes....
LS came out in a Box and 1 on Aaron Devan.... I don't have enough fingers to count how many times Devan has seen a Box and 1 this season.... That allowed guys like Jordan Brooks and Dyllon Emory-Hudson to get some early baskets....
During the second quarter McD switched up their defense a little playing some 1-3-1 and man to man trying to confuse LS... It did have them rush a little more than normal but the only problem was Miller was still on fire as he buried 4 treys in the first half in route to 18 points by halftime and leading 33 - 25.... Devan could never really get into a grove as each time he touched the ball, he would have 2 guys on him....
Jaquan Johnson did a great job not letting LS pg Alec Groff touch the basketball.... Groff tried all type of ways to get free but Johnson is a tough defender with strength and Groff began to get a little frustrated...
As the 3rd quarter began, LS came out with a little more hunger and attacked the glass hard.... I could tell that the McD coaches told them to get to the basket because McD attacked strong each time down either drawing fouls or scoring the basket... The lineup of Johnson, Kyle Green, Milik Gantz, Devan and Brooks seemed to be the most efficient tonight as McD was well on their way to tying this game up, down 41 - 37.... Johnson gets a steal and attacks the basket but gets cloths lined out of the air as he had a nasty fall to the deck that stopped the game for at least 10 mins.... down by 4 points at the time, Caleb Barwin came in for Johnson, who would never return, and missed both free throws.... next possession, McD shot a three pointer and missed as they came up empty on the entire two possessions.... THAT WAS THEIR MOMENT TO TAKE THE LEAD AND THEY BLEW IT!!!!!!
At one point in the 3rd quarter, McD missed 6 straight free throws and shot 4 - 10 for the quarter at the line...
As the game went on, McD would bring the lead down to 1 point off of a Brooks put back 43 - 42.... LS would then begin to make big plays... JD Achille takes Hudson to the hole for two and then Shawn Singh hits a trey as LS would never look back...
Miller would finish this game in the old school fashion going 10 - 10 from the line in the fourth quarter alone dropping 30 points on McD and getting the win 70 - 58.....
Devan had 18 points and 7 rebounds while brooks chipped in 15 points and 6 rebs..... I thought that the Freshman Milik Gantz gave some great energy on the floor and made some nice plays.... If he can cut down on his turnovers, his playing time will increase.... With stats like 5 points, 5 rebs, 3 assist and 3 steals, you can see the potential is there..... He just needs more time...
It really hurt McD that Johnson didn't return because he and Green had LS backcourt rattled at the time.... They still have 1 more game as I believe they will play Greencastle for a berth into the State tourney....
