Mid Penn Officiating....

I was going to try and stay away from this topic but I see it's becoming a HUGE issue all around the Mid Penn......

Far too many games I attend, I see officials doing their best job to "Control The Game"....  What tends to happen is they overuse the whistle and take away from the players playing the game....

It seems to me that these players aren't learning to play tough and prepare for the playoffs because almost every time down court, there's a whistle being blown....  It's to the point now that players and coaches are expecting a whistle to be blown and if it's not blown, it causes a semi riot all over the gym....

When the kids get into the State playoffs and the officiating crew is from District 1 or 12 or 11, our kids will not be ready for the physical play that they're going to see.....

In short, all I'm saying is, PLEASE let these kids play the game and let the players and coaches determine the outcome of the game, not the officials.....  In no game should there be 50 fouls called and 70 free throw attempts....

What are your thoughts????

  1. Absolutely the hardest position on the floor is being an official (100% of the time somebody is questioning your call;50% will agree and50% will disagree). But to call all these tickey-tac fouls, really does destroy the game. Every game becomes a foul shooting contest against the surviving players(those that didn'tfoul out) plus everybody is in the bonus and GOOD PLAYERS ARE AFRAID TO PLAY HARD SO THEY DON'T PICK UP THEIR LAST FOUL.
So I hate to agree with Coach Little; but he is right-on here.

    1. WOW.... I'm 2 for 2 today with you.... lol... On a serious note, you are correct when you say the "better players" are afraid to play hard because they don't want to pick up the fouls early and often... It sucks when higher level kids make a physical play and get whistled because the move they made was a higher level move... Coaches come to watch MacIntyre, Thomas, Devan and a few more guys play... Not to sit on the bench and watch the games... Seems to me, and I may be wrong, that some officials try to keep games close so the underdog will have a chance at winning the game....

  2. You give the officials too much credit; they aren't quick-minded or smart enough to keep the games close. But they are hurting the game with the tickey-tac whistles.

  3. One of the biggest problems is the three man crew. There weren't enough quality refs before when only two did a game. We have now watered down the pool and have promoted refs to varsity who should still be doing middle school. The game has changed and varsity players now are playing at a college level compared to twenty years ago. Its tough to keep up. If you hesitate on a call, they're on the other end when you blow your whistle so calls are anticipated. Refs also tend to look at things and think a kid couldn't do that move without travelling or couldn't block that shot without fouling. That's a product of the kids getting better. Flopping is becoming a major problem again, also (watch McIntyre, he falls down when someone gets close to him). Faking a foul was a T for a couple of years until it became obvious that it was too much of a judgement call. Coaches should police it because people get hurt when you have players on the floor for no reason and its just bad basketball.
